Controlling multiple lights from different locations in your home can be a challenge, especially when you’re dealing with an unusual configuration. Smart switches and wireless technology offer a convenient solution. This article will guide you through the process of wirelessly connecting multiple light switches for greater control and convenience in your home lighting setup. In the video above, Ask This Old House master electrician Heath Eastman demonstrates how to install and program a wireless light switch system in a kitchen with six lights controlled by multiple switches.

What Are Wireless Light Switch Systems?

Wireless light switch systems have come a long way since their introduction over 30 years ago. Today’s technology offers reliable, user-friendly solutions for controlling multiple lights from various locations without the need for complex wiring. These systems allow homeowners to customize their lighting arrangements without extensive electrical work.

Components of a Wireless Light Switch System

A typical wireless light switch system consists of several key components:

  • Smart switches: These replace your existing wired switches and connect to your home’s electrical system.
  • Wireless remotes: These battery-powered devices can be mounted anywhere and control the smart switches wirelessly.
  • Smart hub: This central device connects your switches to your home network, enabling control via smartphone apps and voice assistants.
  • Dedicated apps: These smartphone applications enable real-time control, scheduling, and customization.

Benefits of Wireless Light Switch Systems

Wireless light switch systems offer several advantages for homeowners:

  • Flexibility in switch placement: Position switches wherever convenient without the need for extensive wiring.
  • Easy installation: Most systems are designed for easy DIY installation and don’t require rewiring.
  • Ability to control multiple lights from a single location: Streamline control with grouped configurations.
  • Integration with smart home systems: Connect with smart home ecosystems such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home.
  • Customizable lighting scenes and schedules: Tailor lighting to your daily routines and preferences for enhanced ambiance.

Limitations of Wireless Light Switch Systems

Despite their benefits, wireless light switch systems have certain limitations:

  • Initial costs: Smart switches and hubs can be more expensive than traditional switches.
  • Dependency on Wi-Fi: These systems rely on a stable Wi-Fi connection, which may be an issue in areas with poor signal strength.
  • Compatibility issues: Not all smart switches are compatible with every home automation system.

Installing Wireless Light Switches

Installing wireless light switches is a relatively straightforward process that most homeowners can accomplish with basic DIY skills. However, if you’re uncomfortable working with electrical wiring, consult a professional electrician. Let’s examine the process to ensure a safe and efficient installation.

Step-by-Step Installation Process

Follow these steps to install wireless light switches:

  1. Turn off the power at the main breaker to ensure safety.
  2. Remove the existing switch cover and switch from the wall box.
  3. Disconnect the wires from the old switch, noting their positions for reference.
  4. Connect the wires to the new smart switch according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Secure the smart switch in the wall box and replace the cover plate.
  6. Repeat the process for all switches you want to replace.
  7. Install the wireless remote(s) in desired locations using the provided mounting bracket.
  8. Turn the power back on and test the switches to ensure proper installation.

Programming Wireless Light Switches

Once the switches are installed, you’ll need to program them to work together. Here’s a general guide to programming:

  1. Put the smart switch into programming mode by pressing and holding the designated button.
  2. Press and hold the button on the wireless remote to pair it with the switch.
  3. Test the connection by using the remote to control the lights.
  4. Repeat the process for all switches and remotes in your system.

Eastman shows this process in action, linking multiple switches to a single remote for convenient control of all the kitchen lights.

Expanding Your Wireless Light Switch System

One of the advantages of wireless light switch systems is their scalability. You can easily expand the system to control more lights or add functionality over time. This flexibility allows homeowners to continually improve their lighting setup.

Adding More Switches and Remotes

To add more switches or remotes to your existing system, follow these steps:

  1. Install the new smart switch or mount the new remote as described earlier.
  2. Put the existing switches into programming mode.
  3. Pair the new device with the existing switches according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Test the new configuration to ensure all devices are working together correctly.

Integrating With Smart Home Systems

Many wireless light switch systems can be integrated with broader smart home platforms. This allows for enhanced control and additional features. To integrate the system, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the smart hub to your home network.
  2. Download the manufacturer’s app on your smartphone.
  3. Follow the app’s instructions to add your switches to the system.
  4. Explore features such as voice control, scheduling, and custom scenes to make the most of your setup.

Expanding With Advanced Features

Advanced features can further enhance your lighting system:

  • Voice control: Use voice assistants to control the lights, adding convenience and modern flair.
  • Scheduling: Automate your lights to fit your daily routines and enhance energy efficiency.
  • Scenes: Create and activate predefined lighting scenarios to match different activities like cooking or relaxing.

Troubleshooting Common Wireless Light Switch Issues

While modern wireless light switch systems are generally reliable, you may occasionally encounter issues. Here are some common problems and their solutions to keep your system running smoothly:

  • App connectivity issues: Verify your Wi-Fi connection and restart the smart hub if needed.
  • Firmware updates: Ensure all devices have the latest firmware updates to avoid compatibility issues.
  • Switch not connecting: Ensure it’s within the range of the hub or other switches, and check the power supply.
  • Unresponsive remote: Check and replace the batteries if necessary.

Applications for Wireless Light Switch Systems

Wireless light switch systems have applications beyond just replacing existing switches. They offer creative solutions for various lighting challenges and preferences. Here are some ideas to enhance convenience and functionality:

  • Automate lights to simulate occupancy when you’re away. This can improve security by deterring potential intruders.
  • Control hard-to-reach switches. This is ideal for basements or attics where access is limited.
  • Extend control outdoors for improved ambiance and security with garden and landscape lighting.
  • Use wireless controls for under-cabinet or accent lighting to enhance room aesthetics.

Resources

Eastman installed the Caseta by Lutron Smart Kit. This included three In-Wall Smart Dimmer Switches to replace the old switches, two Pico Smart Remotes for Dimmers at both entryways to communicate with all the other switches, and a Smart Bridge to connect it all to the Internet. The kit is manufactured by Caseta.

All the other materials Eastman used for this project, including the two gang cover plate and the screwdriver, can be found at home centers.

Expert assistance with this segment was provided by Eaton and Eastman Electric.
